This is a wonderful 1890's Victorian house on Lincoln Avenue in Newtown, Boro. The homeowners have made great efforts to restore the first floor of their home to it's original Victorian splendor. When they first visited my office, the kitchen, with it's high ceilings and limited counter space was anything but functional. The dining room had a built-in hutch made from quarter sawn oak, typical of the period, which had mellowed to a lovely honey color over time. We wanted to capture this look and feel in the cabinets we chose for the kitchen. Since the graining of the oak wood would have been to "active" and unsettling for the amount of cabinets the kitchen required, we chose a cherry wood with mellow undertones, neutralized it with a light toner to even out the color and finished it with a top coating of "environmentally friendly" lacquer in a flat finish. This gave the wood a very soft, mellow and inviting look and feel. We took the cabinets above the stove to the ceiling taking particular care to create a horizontal line in the upper sections, typical of the era. The combination of Corian and granite materials on the counters provided the perfect blend of beauty and function.
