The "Henry M. Pownall" house on Washington Street in Newtown Boro was built ca. 1879. During the renovations we called it the "Civil War" house because the stained glass windows in the second floor study depict the congressional Medal of Honor conveyed to Mr. Pownall during the Civil War. Working with Michael Hutchinson Builders of Newtown, we enlarged the existing kitchen and added a wrap-around porch to the back of the house. We chose cabinetry and a door style that was similar to original woodwork in other areas of the house and enlarged the kitchen window to take advantage of a wonderful view of the side gardens. The height and depth of the wall cabinets was varied to create interesting mitered corners and to expose a brick wall which had once been the back of the house. This also gave the clients the opportunity to display their collections in "nook" type areas above the cabinetry. The "almost" heart shaped (or piano shaped, depending on where you are standing) granite island was a little bit of whimsy created to enable the traffic patterns to work and to give room for stools at counter height. The apothecary cabinet was designed to incorporate an existing pass-thru-doorway from the kitchen into the dining room. Out of site in the picture but integral to the design are several large windows in the corner of the new addition which is now the table area. This allowed the light from the afternoon sun to flow unobstructed into the entire kitchen. The glass doors onto the new patio which lead to the garden make this a perfect setting for warm weather entertaining. |
